The roll I ruinedDer Film, den ich ruiniert habe
Last winter I poured tired developer over a roll I had carried around for a month. The chemistry looked fine. The bottle said nothing. Twenty minutes later I held thirty-six blank frames of things that had happened once.
I built Ansatz so that does not happen to me again.
Ansatz, German: a freshly mixed batch of working chemistry. Also a first guess that you refine. I mean both.
Letzten Winter habe ich müden Entwickler über einen Film gegossen, den ich einen Monat lang mit mir herumgetragen hatte. Die Chemie sah gut aus. Die Flasche sagte nichts. Zwanzig Minuten später hielt ich sechsunddreißig leere Bilder von Dingen in der Hand, die nur einmal passiert sind.
Ansatz habe ich gebaut, damit mir das nicht noch einmal passiert.
Der Ansatz: die frisch angesetzte Arbeitslösung. Und der erste Versuch, den man Schritt für Schritt verfeinert. Ich meine beides.

Every batch I mix gets counted: rolls run, days since mixing, capacity left. Before a session Ansatz shows me the state of my chemistry and the corrected time, with the arithmetic written out:
A step timer with agitation cues runs the session. Wet hands are fine, the whole screen is the button.
Every number traces back to a datasheet, a kit instruction or my own setting. Ansatz never invents chemistry.
Jeder Ansatz wird mitgezählt: entwickelte Filme, Tage seit dem Ansetzen, Restkapazität. Vor der Session zeigt mir Ansatz den Zustand meiner Chemie und die korrigierte Zeit, mit ausgeschriebener Rechnung:
Ein Stufen-Timer mit Kipp-Signalen führt durch die Session. Nasse Hände sind egal, der ganze Bildschirm ist die Taste.
Jede Zahl geht auf ein Datenblatt, eine Kit-Anleitung oder meine eigene Einstellung zurück. Ansatz erfindet keine Chemie.

The log writes itself while the timer runs. Afterwards one optional screen: rating, note, a photo of the negatives. Fifteen seconds.
Then my favorite part: two sessions side by side. Equal rows fold away, differences light up.
In March I developed a roll that came out perfect. Now I can look up why.
Das Protokoll schreibt sich von selbst, während der Timer läuft. Danach ein optionaler Bildschirm: Bewertung, Notiz, ein Foto der Negative. Fünfzehn Sekunden.
Dann mein Lieblingsteil: zwei Sessions nebeneinander. Gleiches klappt zusammen, Unterschiede leuchten auf.
Im März ist mir ein Film perfekt gelungen. Jetzt kann ich nachschlagen, warum.
Your negatives keep their storyDeine Negative behalten ihre Geschichte
One printed page per roll, sized for the negative sleeves in my binder: film, EI, camera, the development record, rating, notes. It slides in behind the sleeve. In thirty years the story is still on paper, next to the film.
Black on white, fine for any laser printer. A blank template for pencil notes is free. I still carry a pencil myself.
Ein gedrucktes Blatt pro Film, passend zu den Negativhüllen im Ordner: Film, EI, Kamera, das Entwicklungsprotokoll, Bewertung, Notizen. Es rutscht hinter die Hülle. In dreißig Jahren steht die Geschichte noch auf Papier, direkt neben dem Film.
Schwarz auf weiß, für jeden Laserdrucker. Eine leere Vorlage zum Handausfüllen ist gratis. Ich habe selbst immer einen Bleistift dabei.

Color paper reacts to every visible wavelength. No app changes physics. So for RA-4 printing Ansatz switches the screen off and speaks instead: spoken steps, a beep pattern you learn in one session, automatic advance.

As far as I can tell, nobody else bothered to build this.
Farbpapier reagiert auf jede sichtbare Wellenlänge. Keine App ändert Physik. Für RA-4 schaltet Ansatz den Bildschirm deshalb ab und spricht stattdessen: angesagte Schritte, ein Piepmuster, das man in einer Session lernt, automatischer Schrittwechsel.
Telefon mit dem Gesicht nach unten, Licht aus. Zweimal auf den Tisch klopfen zum Bestätigen, oder die Kopfhörertaste drücken.
Soweit ich sehe, hat sich das sonst niemand angetan.

No. No screen is guaranteed paper safe and I will not claim mine is. The red mode protects your dark adaptation, that is the real promise. For B&W printing, put a deep red gel over the screen and run the coin test: coin on a paper strip, phone at working distance, ten minutes, develop. A visible outline means fogging. Color paper: no screen, ever. That is what blackout mode is for.
Ehrlich: nein. Kein Bildschirm ist garantiert papiersicher, und ich behaupte es nicht. Der Rotmodus schützt deine Dunkeladaption, das ist das echte Versprechen. Für S/W-Prints: tiefrote Filterfolie über den Bildschirm und den Münztest machen: Münze auf einen Papierstreifen, Telefon in Arbeitsabstand, zehn Minuten, entwickeln. Ein sichtbarer Umriss heißt Schleier. Farbpapier: nie ein Bildschirm. Dafür gibt es den Blackout-Modus.
